Italy has reached a major milestone in the evolution of osteopathic healthcare in December 2025. After years of professional advocacy and legislative work, osteopathy is now formally regulated as a healthcare profession under Italian law.

Osteopathy was officially recognized as a health profession within the National Health System, with a defined professional profile, required competencies, and university-level training standards for osteopaths. This transition moves osteopathy from a largely private, self-regulated field into a structured academic and clinical framework aligned with other regulated health professions.

Italy’s recognition places it alongside countries such as United Kingdom and France, where osteopathy has long been regulated, helping to standardize education, safeguard patients, and clarify professional responsibilities. The reform introduces accredited degree pathways, clearer scopes of practice, and stronger collaboration with other healthcare providers.

For practitioners, this means defined professional status and increased institutional credibility. For patients, it ensures higher standards of safety, transparency, and quality of care.

Italy’s achievement reflects a broader European trend toward integrating complementary and manual medicine disciplines into national healthcare systems through regulation, education, and accountability. As implementation continues, the Italian model may serve as an important reference point for other countries considering similar reforms.
